Samuel enlisted November 18, 1861 at Knox County, Indiana at age 34 and was mustered in at Indianapolis, Indiana December 14, 1861, as a Sergeant in Captain Denny's Company E, 51st Indiana Volunteers for a three year stint. He served in the following campaigns:
Samuel was honorably discharged December 15, 1864 as Sergeant, by reason of expiration of service.
He had one daughter, Mary Elizabeth, born 1862 in Vinncennes, Indiana while he was in the service (she died in 1881 from complications during childbirth). After he came home, he and his wife had three more daughters and one son who was only one month old when Samuel died.
Samuel died in 1875 of blood poisoning from the wound he received in battle in 1864. It has been rumored that he received several medals but where these are none know. He was also a member of the G.A.R., and they conducted his funeral services. He is buried in Wheatland, Indiana.
